Evaluation Task 8 - What targets will i set myself for next year, when making trailer?

Targets for next Year
My targets for next year are going to mainly be on the editing side of things, so i am going to make a better title for example which could be animated to make it more like a real movie would be. I think I would like to stick to action genre because you can do so much stuff in action which could make it a lot better. Also I would like to get better shots when filming, for example if we incorporate a fight scene we need to get closer shots so that it looks more intense for the audiences eyes. This will also make a lot more exciting as well just because if gives it more energy to the fight scene. Also more sound effects would be better as well because then that will make the fight scene more realistic because then you can hear the punches more clearly.

Another thing is to get a better quality camera which is better than using a phone, it will make the trailer look more like a real trailer where the audience can see more clearly and make this. Another thing is to stay on top of my coursework because i had so much to catch up on that it affected the time of doing the actual filming, which could of been done earlier leaving s more time to edit.

What do I feel I have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

I have learnt a lot during the progression of making the film from scratch, for example we have learnt a lot of camera angles and know how to use them effectively making the film look better. Also when using the editing software you can cut them to make the clips quicker so that it looks more fast paced and more like an action film rather than a slow romance film. Also I have learnt a lot about genres of films and what kind of story lines they have in them for example action usually have a story line where either someone is wanting to get revenge on someone for killing their family member, or it a special ops soldier is hired to take out a terrorist group by himself and manages to get the woman of his life at the same time. Also she gets kidnapped by them so he has to go save her before she gets killed.

In a romance film it would mostly be a man meets a girl (or other way round) then they spend a lot of time together which then makes them fall in love with each other, however there is something wrong with their relationship which then makes them split a part. After about a week one of them manages to get the other back then they live happily ever after.

I also learnt a lot about technology for example I have learnt a lot of techniques on the editing software that we have used. For example on the adobe premiere there is a lot of tools which is on there and it can be very confusing if you have no idea what you are doing or if you are new to it.

If you want to add some affects to the project as well then you have to drag them into it as well, which can be frustrating at times because it will either not go in the right place, or it won’t load and then will suddenly appear in the wrong place. However i managed to get used to get use to the controls and technique of the software which led me to creating some good production credits.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of this product?

From the process of making our product i have learnt a lot of techniques on the editing software that we have used. For example on the adobe premiere there is a lot of tools which is on there and it can be very confusing if you have no idea what you are doing or if you are new to it. It is not very straight forward either because you have to load up the file from my documents then drag it onto the timeline, it wouldn't be very easy to figure out if we didn't have the teachers help to start us off. If you want to add some affects to the project as well then you have to drag them into it as well, which can be frustrating at times because it will either not go in the right place, or it wont load and then will suddenly appear in the wrong place. Over all i can see that technology has improved a lot over the years and has allowed us to many impressive things that we wouldn't be able to do back in the early 90's. For example we can enter our text and improve it by using other programs such as Photoshop.

On the other hand the camera that we used was a phone which doesn't have the best quality camera but was still able to produce a 1080p video which is surprising, because back in 2005 that was not available to TV or YouTube. so it shows how much better technology has gotten, if a phone which is used for calling can make a 1080p video just like a video camera, which is its main job.

We attracted the audience from making annotations on the video, they explain how we made the video and what we struggled to do. Another thing we did is put tags on the video so that if that word is searched up it will then show up on the search list and more people will then be able to view the video.

Evaluation Task 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Who would be the audience for your media product? 

The film is a 12 rated so it will mainly be for teenagers because they are the ones that are most likely to watch it because they are into action movies. Their taste could be that they like action or Romance movies, because this is when boys tend to go and watch Action movies and when girls go and watch Romance movies.

They would shop at Tesco's because that is where they would buy food. Also it is a superstore so they can buy TV's, consoles and food there. Also they could say to there friends that they will buy them something nice from Tesco's.

The music that they would listen to is most probably pop or hip hop, because that is very popular, there is a lot of teenagers that listen to pop. However there are some that listen to rock which would be okay for our film. The music that we use is a mix of both kind of. It has some intense music which is a mix.

There favorite TV programs that they would watch would be most probably action shows, For example Flash the TV program would be suitable for the male audience because it has a lot of action in it and it would be good because they like the adrenaline that comes from the show.

The narration of the film 

What does a production company do? 
A production company is a company that produces the film, they are the ones that make the film and get it known to everyone, they will create trailers and posters so that the film will become more known to the public. They will also try and get synergy involved as well so that they can put their film on other companies products so that it is well known.

The idea of a distributor and who might be and why
A distributor is the part of the company that distributes it to companies around the world, for example Walt Disney studios are the ones that make the films and Walt Disney production are the ones that distribute the film to cinemas around the world and then put them onto DVD.

Where the money might have come from?
The money would of come from another production company who want to get involved with our film, so they would give us a budget, then we spend it on making the film and distributing the film around the world to cinemas, when we are finished with the film they will take a share of the money that we have made because they are the noes that gave us a budget.

Why the various people are named in the titles?
The names which appear in the film are the people that contributed to the film, for example it says Bill Cottee he is only in the film for about 1 to 2 seconds, but the reason for why his name is in the film is because he helped us with filming the film. He was the one that filmed most of the fight scene on the bridge. We don't have any of the jobs displayed during the film because it would look bad, plus it would take the attention away from what is going on in the film.

What our film is similar institutionally? 
Our film is institutionally similar to films like Die hard, this film was similar to our film because it had the same kind of story line as to our one. Also it is like Taken because it does have a phone scene in there.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

One of the characters that we tried to link the antagonist with was a fighter from the film The Raid. He is one of the main antagonists in the film and is a very skilled fighter, he could take on the two protagonists at the same time with ease. He also manages to predict their every move and counter their attacks, resulting in them getting beaten up.





Another character we tried to make similar to is a person in the film is the guy from fast and furious, he is the villain and he wears the same kind of clothes as the villain in our film. We tried to make him as close to him as possible just so he looks good.

The third character we tried to get him to be as close to was a character in James Bond, the role of the character is similar to a henchman in the film who tries to take out James Bond but fails, he his good at fighting and he is evil.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge form and conventions of real media products? 

The  title screen of our film is meant to be metal like it is a bullet or a gun. Also the title is bold so that it stand out to the audience. It also shows that the film it is an action film, because real action movies use fonts which are big and bold and stand out out the audience. This also shows the audience that it is an action film as well.

For the setting the film was mostly at the bridge, which we thought was a good place for the fight scene because it was outside and we had more space to do the fight scene, plus it was a lot more better than doing a fight scene inside the house because it would of been harder to get good camera shots because it is a small space.




The clothes that we are wearing are not what we are supposed to be. We are supposed to be policemen but we had no police uniform, so we decided that we would be undercover policemen that are patrolling a neighborhood. To compare with big action movies i'd say that it doesn't really matter that we don't have the uniform because it look a lot more better when we fight in the clothes we are in, however it would of been better if we did have a better style of clothes rather than coats and jeans.






We tried to use lots of screen shots in our film to make it look more like an action movie. So we make it look like it is fast paced especially when it comes to the fight scene. Like real action movies they have lots of shots of one fight sequence, this shows that they can use a range of shots. That's what we did so we can show that we can use a bunch of shots well to make the film look good.




The font  title is bold so that it stand out to the audience. It also shows that the film it is an action film, because real action movies use fonts which are big and bold and stand out out the audience.

The story is about two policemen who are patrolling the street one day and they get a phone call saying that there has been a murder close to them. They then rush to go and see what is going on, when they arrive they discover a body in the house. Suddenly a man runs straight out of the gate. it then goes straight in to a chase, where they end up on a bridge and have a battle 2 against one. It then ends with the bad guy getting beaten. The opening sets it up well because it shows that we serious by the phone call we get. This makes the introduction seem very intense and sets up a good point for when we find the body.


The genre of the film is a intense action movie, the opening suggests it by showing an intense scene of getting a phone call, The music gets serious all of a sudden this gives it a good feeling to the audience by making it feel intense. By getting the phone call we try to make it seem serious so it gives the audience the feel that something really bad has happened.



The characters are introduced in different ways, one way that we introduced one character was by using the phone call, when Matt answers the phone it makes the audience focus on him instead of the other character. The second protagonist is introduced by discovering a dead body and says "he is dead". Finally the antagonist is introduced when he starts running out of the house to try and get away from the protagonists. These are good ways to introduce them because they are quick paced introductions which is good for an action movie.

The main special effects that we used was mainly the punch noise during the fight scene, it gives a good effect to the fight scene. For example in the picture when i do the kick we add in a kick sound and a sound when Conor dodges the kick. After that we add in a hit sound when he gets kicked down too the ground. Overall it makes it a great fight scene.

Equipment

The equipment that we used is the tripod and a phone, we borrowed the tripod from the school and we used Conor's phone to film with. The phone was not the best quality so the picture quality is not the best and we could of used a better camera to record. It was difficult to record with tripod because the phone would not stay on the tripod and would keep changing position. But we managed to get it recorded, most of the time we didn't even use the tripod we got another person to record it. This proved to be difficult because the camera was shaky and made the video look like it was bad quality, but we managed to do it. There was also people walking pass the camera a lot so this proved to be hard and a bad place to film since it was a public place.

How are social groups represented in our production?

There are many social groups which are in our film are policemen which are investigating murder scene, it then turns into a chase/fight scene. We try to make the policemen very serious and act realistic so when they get the call, that there is a murder they act very calm like they are professionals. The stereotypical policemen would usually take the call and wouldn't panic when there is a serious murder, that is what we want Matt and Luke to portray as the police.

The editing in our film is very quick, so we would have lots of cuts to different videos. We did this because the film is supposed to be quick, mainly because of the the fight scene which has the most cuts in it to make it look like a sequence of punches and kick, accept they are made in very neat order.

The audio that was put into the film was mainly music to make it more intense. To compare it with Hollywood action it is very fast pace and since we have a chase scene in the film we need fast music. So we chose something that had a good beat to it and sounded very serious for when the fight scene starts.

The Mise-en-Scene was not that good in our film. We wore normal clothes so it didn't look like we were policemen, so we decided that were going to be undercover policemen on patrol. We tried to act like real policemen and stay like that as we were doing the fight scene and chase scene.

There were many camera shots used in our film, we used a lot of them because we wanted to make it very fast pace and give the viewer a lot of angles of the scene. For example in the middle of the fight scene, Matt goes for the punch and then the kick. We do a POV point of when he goes for a punch to make it seem realistic and give perspective from the Antagonists point./ We then switch it over to a high angle where the kick happens. We do this because in famous action films they use different camera shots to make it more exciting. Also if you use different  shots it shows that you know your shot terminology and can use them effectively to make the film look good.

Certificate Rating
The certificate rating of our film would be a 12

It would be considered a 12 because there is a lot of violence in the film which is not appropriate for young people of age because it could influence them to become violent to other people around them. They could also imitate the fight moves, which could result in there own injuries. Also there is a scene where a person is getting murdered and strangled which could make people feel uncomfortable. There is no blood or bad injuries which show blood in the film which is why we have not put it at a 15. Also there is no sex or nudity in the film because if there was that means it would have to be put as 15 rated.Another factor which keeps it at a 12 is that there is no swearing in the film, there can be swearing in a 12 rated film but there can't be a lot because it would be put up to 15.

On the third day of editing we were required to finish what we needed for our film which involved us completely cutting and manipulating the fight scene into our film and then editing the entire film to ensure a smooth professional finish to every part of our film. We started with the fight scene as it obviously was a priority to get it sorted before doing any final editing.

We started off by bringing up the designated file on the editing software which contained the relevant clips which we were required to cut and edit to go into our film. After recollecting it we began by viewing what we had and then cutting each individual clip where necessary, as we wanted a relatively quick paced and vibrant fight scene between the three main characters. We achieved this relatively quickly as although we had an array of different shots and angles, many did not need to be cut too much due to the nature of the fight scene.

In the fight scene the characters each have moments in which they recover and so with this in mind we barely manipulated these parts as we believed they would be effective at portraying the physical attributes which are so commonly associated with action movie heroes. However for the other clips; including the actual punches or kicks we needed to alter them substantially to keep the ecstatic flow of the fight scene which allows a more emphatic view on the choreography of the fight scene in our opening scene to the movie.

After we finished cutting down the scenes to fit into the time frame we then ensured that it all ran smoothly throughout the entirety of the film. Although a few visual complications and a couple of enigmas were present, we deemed them necessary to the understanding of the audience and decided that it we rendered the lighting of the individual clips we could resemble the same lighting from the other clips to make it seem more realistic and professional.

Afterwards the final task we had to do was to ensure the music and sound effects we had chosen were all in the correct position in accordance to the actual film in general. We were also required in addition to incoroporate our production credits wgich we had created earlier into our film for a more authentic look and we also placed relevant credit to the various people who took part through the short opening credits we used. The final thing we had to do after completing the tasks was to incorporate the final title of the movie; so in this case we decided that an animatic title would be a better choice due to the action movie genre we had chosen and so we got one of our previous designs for a title and animated it using adobe fireworks. We then placed it into our film at the end to help add emphasis onto the name of the film and we believe this will be integral at relating to the audience.

On the second day of editing we were required to actually cut and blend the videos we had created into the professional and designated ordering we wanted. We began by splitting the clips into three sections so that we could focus on the editing on one specific bit to allow for a higher quality finish of each part. We chose to do the chase scene first as we deemed that to be the most time consuming in terms of sorting it out as it most likely contained the highest number of clips overall.

We began by cutting each individual clip so that it would be quick and efficient to help emphasise the chase scene happening. So we ensured that each shot wasn't prolonged too much as we believed that could have a negative effect on our film as the quickness of the chase scene helps engage the audience into our film and so it was integral to achieve a high standard in this part. We managed to achieve this for each of our clips we used as we cut each one to an appropriate manner in which the audience are still fully aware of the storyline of our opening scene and remain engaged throughout the chase scene.

 We also decided that through the use of the music we had chosen that we would correlate the movie clips with the music to help create a tense atmosphere amongst the audience and add effect to the beginning of the chase scene. We decided that due to the music we chose having a quieter opening followed by a louder percussion noise before going into the main section of the film, we decided that the shot of the protagonists seeing the antagonist attempted escape would be a good shot to use it on as it adds the necessary emphasis on the antagonists discovery.

Secondarily we focused on the opening scene and Bill's character death, we all agreed that the main part to this scene was the short dialogue between the main protagonists and the discovery of the body. So playing on this idea we developed the audio of the clips involving the protagonists so that the audience can hear them clearer and that the friendship between the two may be broadcast more through their interactions with one another.

The next part we focused on was Bill's death scene in which we decided to keep relatively short as we wanted to ensure that the chase and fight scene got the relevant screen time due to them being the main part in our opening scene. However we still cut down both these scenes extensively to help add effect and we wanted to incorporate some sort of ambiance but decided against it as we thought it was more suited to a horror film. Afterwards we had to stop there due to the time it took us to cut and edit these pieces in with there various different requirements, so we were not able to finish all the scenes as we had to focus on the fight scene which we all knew would take an extensive amount of time.
