Action film - Opening titles

Opening Titles

The opening title for an action film are usually very bold and stand out. A good example of a action title is The expendables. The Expendables title is very bold and stands out, this is used to show that there is going to be a lot of action in the film. Also the title looks like it is made out of metal, this shows manliness and strength this will make the target audience think that this will have tonnes of action in it.

The Die Hard 2 title is very bold as well, it stands to the audience because of the color of the words. The dark blue represents cold just like the people are in the actual film to the main protagonist.  It is big and bold because they want to make the audience feel like they are trying to make the film look big and explosive, so that it stands out to people.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles title is a very good example for a action movie title. You can tell because of the color, the font and the size. The color represents the what the characters are like, they are green, giant turtles so represents it very good. The font size is Asian style in someway because the "T" and the "S" have a sword spike at the end to make it look more like a katana sword. The size of the  title shows that they are bigger then the usual size of a turtle, this shows that they are mutants and not any normal turtles.

Our own title will be a very bold font so that it will stand to the audience and give them the feeling that it is powerful like a soldier. We want it to make it stand out so that it looks more dangerous like there is going to be danger and like you are close to death. Also we want the title of the film to sound like it is dangerous and meaningful, like it has a story to tell for example "Revenge" tells you a short story that someone is going to get revenge and kill someone. The background color would be most likely to be black because then the title will stand out to the audience more.

Action Movie - Audience

Audience

For the action target audience it would mostly be men from the age 16 - 40 because males who are teenagers love a good adrenaline burst so that they can feel hyped about the movie. This is used because when you are grow up you can get the adrenaline and it makes the audience feel like they can do anything. Action movies attract males as it is stereotypical for men to be attracted to violence films.  There would be different types of races that watch action moves only because it is one of the most watched and biggest out of all of the genres.

Jason Statham is a good example for action movies this is because he is a the stereotypical man who is strong and seems like he doesn't want to be messed with. This would make male audiences want to watch because he knows how to fight and most males like violence because it gets their blood pumping and gives them  adrenaline.

Things that would attract the action audience would be helicopters explosions, hand to hand combat, gunfights, adrenaline bursts and a main character who portrays a action hero very good.

In our movie we are trying to include hand to hand combat to make the film  seem like it has more action in it and gives the audience more adrenaline  for when they are watching. Also we will make it seem like we are in the mafia so that we can make the audience think that we are going to make it so that there is a good chance that the audience will think that there is going to be a lot of fight scenes and action.

Research and Planning Targets

You have got a lot of work to evidence to show how your film has been planned and is coming to be. Share responsbilities between your group and make sure that everything is uploaded by the end of term. Revisit your past posts and think about where you can add some theoretical comments - think about camera, representation, mise-en-scene, editing and camera composition.

Action Movie - Character Ideas

Action Movie - Character Ideas

Character Background Information:
Primary Protagonist: The main character in the opening scene, a calm and collected character who has an expertise in fighting through the training he received in the military. His role in the Puppeteers company is highly disputed as his constant disregard of the set rules and his natural leadership qualities leave him as a major concern for mutiny to the Puppeteer, his mysterious and relaxed nature is integral in his antisocial behaviour towards the other members of the corporation. We have chosen to make this character have these character traits as we believe that the antisocial and somewhat uncaring attitude can help the audience relate this character to others from the action genre due to the masculinity and strength shown in the characters personality.
Secondary Protagonist: The supposed partner to the main character in the opening scene, he in many ways contrasts the quiet and serious nature of the protagonist as his light-hearted and humorous approach helps lighten the somewhat atmosphere of the group. He is known to be somewhat clumsy and forgetful but is also known to be a great leader due to his vast charismatic skill and ability to talk to most people, also accompanied with his high skill in weaponry and tactics. We have chosen to give this personality to this character as more often or not in action films the main protagonist is contrasted through the secondary protagonist as direct opposites.

Puppeteer - Antagonist: The main antagonist of the opening scene; a power hungry and manipulative tyrant, a criminal mastermind in the streets of London who's cruel and abusive tactics have made him a feared adversary amongst the cities authorities. He is an upper class businessman who gave into insanity's grip as shown by his unquenchable blood-lust and enjoyment in others misfortune, his upper class but maniacal look helps add an ominous and slightly eerie look to this business tycoon. We have chosen to make the antagonist of the film possess these traits as we believe that these characteristics will give him an original and idealistic personality which people can immediately assume his villainous nature and link him with other antagonists from other action films.

Henchman - Secondary Antagonist: A professional assassin; known throughout the corporation as one of the best in business, his no-nonsense and meticulous attitude to his work has acquired him a reputation amongst his peers as one not to be messed with. His headstrong and sadistic personality ensures that although many find his profession inhumane, he is known to often enjoy the thrill given to him through physical combat or dangerous stunts and enjoys the psychological torture in which he can inflict upon his opponents. We have chosen to give this character this no-nonsense attitude as we believe the professionalism portrayed from this character will help emphasize the characters intentions and easily separate him from the main protagonists and allow him to stand out amongst the other characters.

Action Movie - Props

Action Movie-Props
There are lots of props which are going to be used in our movie. For our main character we are going to make him dress up like a action hero. So he/she would wear a black coat or suit and shades ( sun glasses)

Shades (Sun Glasses) - The shades would be used to make him look like they mysterious and like they are trying to hide themselves so they don't know who their identity is.

Suit: The main characters would be in a suit to make them look like real a hit-man, this also makes the audience think that they are being payed or working for someone. This also makes them look like they are trying to look like they are being serious.  The main antagonist is going to wear a suit to make him look like he takes business very serious and is not to be messed with.

The henchman is going to wear a waistcoat which is smart and black trousers so he looks like he is going into a fight.

The main protagonist is going to wear a long black coat and trousers- we chose the main protagonist to wear a long black coat we want to make him look like he is a serious character. For example when the hero is at the beginning he is either wearing a coat or an army uniform.

The secondary protagonist is going to wear a jacket, shirt and trousers and sick trainers. we
want to make him look like a sidekick of the hero, so he is not as skilled as the hero, so he still learning from the hero. So he can't fight as good as the hero.

The Head antagonist is going to be dressed in a suit like he is part of the mafia, he is also going to be sat behind a desk. This makes him look he is the head of the business.

Initial Ideas for films

Genre ideas:
Horror films:
Action film:

What are the ideas:
Someone is in a storage area and is trying to steal some thing very valuable, the main enemy has to get out of the storage area alive. There are tow secret agents that have to stop him from getting out. The setting is at a storage area where there is long corridors and we can do a couple of fight scenes to make the scene fell more exciting and intense.

Horror: we go to a train station at night and one person goes to get the train. When the train goes there is someone at the end that appears out of no where and then the clip suddenly ends. There is different camera angles of the train station. We use different type of shots to give different perspectives of the train station. There setting would be at a train station at night to make the atmosphere feel tense and scary

Setting-Horror
The settings of our idea is that we are at train station at night. This gives the audience the feeling that they are being watched it also makes the atmosphere feel scary like something bad is going to happen. We will try and film it at night so that no one is there, this will also make it seem scary like it is abandoned.

Character-Horror
The main character could be someone who is a normal guy catching a train, accepts he feels paranoid and feels like he is being watched. This is used so that he portrayed as a person who gets scared very easily. The main antagonist would be portrayed as a scary person who sneaks around and comes out at the least expected moment. This is a good thing to have in a horror because it can make people feel like something unexpected is going to come out and make them jump which gives it a really good horror aspect.

Clueless- Opening analysis

Clueless

Character

The main character in the film is a girl called Cher. She is a teenager girl who lives with a very rich family. Her dad is a lawyer that earns $500 an hour this shows that she from a well educated family. Cher is represented as a typical teenager girl who likes clothes, phone, cars, boys and hanging out with her friends. This also shows that she could be a clumsy, lazy and rude girl to other people because of her wealth. This could be a reason for why she is rude and does bad things like driving without a driving license, this shows that she doesn't care about others and only cares about her self. She is also wearing clothes which are very stylish and fashionable back then, so she could be presented as a popular person in her school. Her Farther who is a lawyer is represented as a serious and miserable person, if something doesn't go his way he will probably get angry and make it his way. You can tell that he is like this when he is talking to his daughter because she says that he should drink some orange juice to get some vitamin c, but he says no in a mean and hateful way, this could say that he is stressed or not happy wit his job, because becoming a lawyer is a hard job.

Sound
The sound at the beginning of the scene is a popular song which is mainly aimed at teenagers so it is a song that teenagers would like at the time. It is used hen introducing the title of the film and when they are showing the clips of when they are driving a car and partying at the pool. This is a good song to use because the audience would know what the song is and it represents the teenagers well.  After the music is played it cuts to her talking to the audience  and she sounds like a very popular person because her voice sounds like she is very sassy, and she thinks that she is the most perfect person in the world. One example is when she is talking about herself and her friend she says that they are named after two famous singers, so they think that it makes them really cool and popular and no-one is cooler than them. When ever something doesn't go her way she either complains about it or goes off in a strop this shows that she his a annoying person. She might also take the mick out of people if they do something embarrassing happens to them, however if it happens to them they will get angry and then complain about it and bully them even more.

Camera Angle
Camera angles are used very well in the opening. The is an high angle of the car that then starts to follow it while the music is playing. The car is a car which look very posh and cool, this give the audience an idea of how she is treated for example she looks like she is a very popular kid at school and gets all of the guys asking her out on a date. This gives the audience a good idea of what her personality is like. A close up is used on both Cher and her Dad when they are discussing, this is a good way to get the audience to  see what their personality is like it also says a lot of how they are going to be later on in the movie.

Titanic - Opening scene

Titanic

Titanic is a love/romance film between two main characters, they go on a boat and fall in love. There is a big difference between them both, the women Rose is from a rich and wealthy family and is traveling to America to get married. The man jack is a poor person who is traveling on the boat to go and get work in America. They then talk to each other and start to get to know each other, eventually they fall in love. Unfortunately the boat hits an iceberg half way during the trip, it splits the ship open and makes water poor into the bottom of the ship. It then eventually splits in two pieces and sinks too the bottom of the Atlantic. The film tells the story of how the boat sank accept with a bit of a love Story. It is the second most profitable film in 2014 after avatar, back in 1997 it was number one for a long time until 2009.

Character

The characters that are in are very different to each other, you can tell that they are different because of the way they are dressed. Rose the female character s a rich and wealthy character who is getting married to wealthy man in America. She is wearing very posh clothes, which makes her stand out from the crowd. She also arrives to the boat in a car which was a very expensive thing to do, plus cars where very rare back then and were only usually seen driven by rich people. The male character
is called jack and he is a poor person who is a poor person who is going to do some work in America. You can tell that he is a poor person because of the clothes he is wearing, they are like they are made out of cloth. It also makes you think that he only has a few clothes to wear and that they are his best clothes because it is quite a rich thing to do to travel on a fairy across the Atlantic. So when he wearing clothes which look poor he stand out from the rich people and is treated like a peasant because of how people were treated back then. You can tell that they are going to be the main characters because of the way they are introduced. Rose comes out of a car with servants helping her and Jack is already there helping to get people ready for the journey.  Another character to analyse is Roses husband, he looks like he is a very smart an wealthy businessman, you can tell by the way he is dressed he is wearing a grey suit, which is considered to be a wealthy style. So he could be in the first or business class at the time. He also looks quite mean and evil he could be stereotyped as a villain because he has a very posh English accent which could be why people think he is mean or evil.

Sound

The sound is used in a great way for the first half of the it is the music which is playing. It sounds like a bright and happy song to play as it is introducing something amazing back in their time. It does get a lot more jolly as they move a long with the scene because it is showing more of the Titanic and how big and impressive it is.  For example when the man gets out of the car the music gets more louder and happier when it shows them looking at the ship. This is to make the audience think just how amazing and big the actual boat is in comparison to other ships at the time. It then goes on to the diegetic sound for example when the man is speaking to Rose. Rose doesn't seem to be impressed with the ship because later on she says its like being in a slave ship, this is to show that she is not happy getting on with her husband because she is being forced to marry him.  The man seems to be mean and evil to her and like he is treating her badly, he might only want to marry her because she comes from a wealthy family and only wants to be rich and spend all of their money. You can also here all of the background sounds to improve the atmosphere of the area. You can hear all of the car
horns and people talking which brings a good atmosphere to the scene it makes it sound very realistic.

Camera Angle

An establishing shot is used to introduce the titanic in it glory, it does this by showing the titanic when it is sunk at the bottom but then as the camera is panning right it changes the look of the titanic to its original form. The shot is a long shot which shows a good chunk of the ship so that the audience has a good chance to see what the titanic looks like. A close up is used on the women Rose to see what her reaction and facial expressions are like when she looks at the boat. This gives the audience an idea of what people actually feel like about the boat, most of the shots show that they are happy and excited to go on the boat, however since rose is the main character in the film they do a close up of how she feels. Another example of a close up is when the man gets out of the car, it shows him as very happy and amazed by the boat because he might not of seen anything like this before. Since it was such a big deal at the time most people were very happy at the time, and were excited to get on. A over the shoulder shot is used when Rose and her fiance are speaking, she says " I don't see what all of the fuss is about", this is used because it shows the ship in the background and the two in front of it, it shows just how big the ship is in comparison to the couple. It makes it look like it is a giant achievement and people have created history, because this would be remembered for ever.

Props/Costumes/Mise-en-Scene

The props and costumes are used very well in this scene. At first the clothes which are worn are mostly rich people who are wearing dressed which are made of expensive fabric. They are wearing different colored clothes to show that they are rich. There is also males who are wearing grey and black suits this also shows that they are wealthy this might be because they own a business which is very successful and has made them a lot of money. There also looks like there are middle class people there who own a shop and earn a decent amount of money, enough to let them go on the ship. The props are good as well for example they have old cars on the road, it shows just how long ago it was. You can tell that it was a long time ago because they look like they are one of the first cars to be made, which only rich people would have.

Note Book-Opening Analysis

NoteBook

Character
The only characters we see are the two ladies and the man in the boat, the lady is old, weak and looks sad. In this scene she looks like she has lost her husband and this could be the reason for why she is very sad. You can tell by her facial expressions that she is upset and wishes she could change things. She also looks helpless because of old age, and this can be a bad thing for people who are old because loosing the person you love can be a big bring down on life, and this can lead to depression and that is why most elder people feel alone, and feel like they can't do anything. The man in the boat could be represented as the husband of the lady, you can tell this by her looking out of the window and looking at him. The man is in the boat and is rowing towards her like he is trying to go back and see her, so they can be back together.

Sound
The sound which is used is mainly non-diegetic sound which is the music. The music is a typical example of a romance film, that being it sounds sad and like someone has lost someone. Romance music is usually played by a piano to reflect the emotions of how the person is feeling at that moment in time. For example the woman seems very upset and you can tell this by the piano music which is reflecting her feelings. There is hardly any talking in the opening scene, which is different to other romance film, but it is near the end of the clip where the lady says "Excuse me? Come on lets get you to bed" This shows that the lady is weak and is struggling in life but this could be different if she had her husband or the person she lost.

Camera Angles
The camera angles which are used in this opening scene have a lot of difference between them. For example there is an establishing shot of a lake which has a man on a boat this shows that it is a romance film because the boat could represent a way that they first met. Also the sunset or sunrise in the background which makes the sky orange is a very romantic thing because it is a stereotypical setting for a couple to meet and make love. Also They use medium shots of the birds flying above the water, this shows that it is going to be a nice and calm film to watch, something that you can relax and watch with your family and girlfriend/boyfriend. This could also represent something else like lost or sadness, like something bad has happened, but it is mostly represented as calm or peaceful like it is something innocent because birds are represented as peaceful, A close up shot is used on the woman in the house to show how she is feeling about her husband. She looks lost and sad because they were in love and did everything together.

Scream - Opening Analysis

Scream

Scream is a movie which is about a murderer who kills people in different kind of ways. He dresses up in a black cloak and a ghost mask to make his victims scared. He has different ways of killing people like phoning people up and scaring them.

Character

There are 2 main characters in the beginning of the scene, the murderer and the women. In this scene you don't see the actual murderer you can only hear his voice, but you can tell what  personality he has by the way he speaks. The murderer sounds like he is an evil person he tries to make the women feel comfortable talking to him by flirting with her, for example they talk about there favorite scary movie, this is a good way to start a conversation with a person and make them feel comfortable. When the murderer talks to her and brings up the conversation about scary movies, this shows the audience that it is going to get bad further on in the film and something is going to happen to the girl. He also does trick her into thinking that he is into her for example he says "Do you have a boyfriend?" which tricks her into thinking that he is trying to ask her out on a date. After she says "Why, are you going to ask me out on a date?" this shows that she is tricked by his questions. This then leads on to him saying " I wanna know who im looking at!" This should shock people at the time because they don't expect the person to say that and that should scare people. This is a good example of a scary film which doesn't scare you by jump scares, it scares you by listening to the conservation. The women is represented as a weak character who gets scared really easy, she is also represented as a gullible and flirty person, who will talk to anyone. She also seems like she is a very popular person at school because she wears clothes which are very popular back then. Also she looks like she is from a wealthy family because she has a fairly big house.

Sound

The sound which is used in the scene is mainly diegetic sound which is mainly talking from the characters. Having diegetic sound and no music is very different to most horror movies because usually when something is trying to be scary, music which starts of small will come on for example one continuous note of a violin which makes the scene get more intense. In this film things get more intense with characters talking to each other, you can tell that it is happening because the murderer starts talking about more weirder subjects like scary movies and whether she has a boyfriend or not, things get more intense until she realizes she is being watched, which changes the situation completely. The non-diegetic sound doesn't start playing until the scene gets very intense and more scary, this is when she is running around the house locking all of the doors around the house, This also makes the atmosphere more scary and intense because the murderer is also talking while the menacing music is playing which more intense and should build up more of an adrenaline rush for the audience.

Camera Angle

The Camera angles used in the scene are used very well and make the scene look a lot scarier for the audience. A close up is used to show the characters expressions when she is scared of the murderer saying "I wanna know who im talking to!" This is brings more of a scarier atmosphere into the shot because it shows the terror of the women's face. An establishing shot is used to show the setting of the shot. For example at the beginning of the scene you can see a shot of the house of where the girl lives, this is shown to be a big house and she might be from a wealthy family. The house is also in the middle of no-where so it looks more scary because if someone is attacked and no-one calls the police nobody is going to come and save them which makes it a lot more scarier. A tracking shot is used when following the girl through the corridor while flirting with the murderer, this makes the audience feel like she is enjoying talking to the murderer but she doesn't know and the makes the audience nervous or scared that murderer is going to jump out at her.

Mise-En-Scene

In this scene you don't see the actual murderer you can only hear his voice, this makes it more scarier because no-one knows where the murderer is at the time and this can make the audience scared and nervous. The girl is wearing clothes which are very popular at the time, so she could be considered popular at her school, also she has a big house so it could be that she is from a wealthy family. They also use good props in the shot, for example the popcorn, when the popcorn is on the oven hob it looks like it is a timer, a timer which could be used to count down the amount of time the girl has until she dies. The knife that she is playing with while talking on the phone could represent the weapon of the murderer, this could make people more scared and unprepared for hat is coming.

Women In Black-Opening Analysis

Women in Black

The Women in black is a horror film, which is about a solicitor who has to go to a house and go through the women's paperwork. What he doesn't know is that a women is haunting that house and anyone who sees her will have something bad happen to her, which is the death of their children.

Characters
In the women in Black opening scene there are 4 characters which are showed, the three girls and the main antagonist The Women in Black. The scene is first introduced with three girls who look innocent and are playing with their toys. They are having a tea party, this is used to make the audience think that they are innocent girls and the audience is made to think that they are cute and adorable like most girls. They are dressed in white dresses which are usually seen as rich clothing, so they could be daughters of noble people who live in rich houses. After they are shown playing with the tea party set it shows them looking behind the camera like there is a person there, it then shows them standing up and look towards the windows. This shows them as innocent, weak and helpless characters who are being controlled by someone. It is like they are being told what to do by an adult and they are following what they are being told.  After they jump out of the window the camera then pans backwards and shows a dark figure in the corner of the room, which is the women in black. She is portrayed as someone to be scared of because she looks scary, this can be shown by the color she is wearing which is black and black is one of the colors of death. Also she looks like she is just staring at the window after they jump, its like she is a ghost who uses paranormal powers to control them and gets them to do what ever she says. When the Women in  Black is shown the audience immediately knows that she is the main antagonist because it shows that she is in a black dress hence the title of the film, and she looks scary so the audience is made to feel as if she is powerful and or to be messed with.

Sound

The sound which is used in the women in black is made to sound scary, so that the audience knows it is a scary film. The main sound that you can hear is the music which is non-diegetic sound. You cannot here diegetic sound until later on during the scene. The music in the scene is made to sound very scary so the audience feels nervous and scared and they think something is going to happen.  The music is like a old jack in the box song, it is made very creepy and gives it a good atmosphere when the dolls are being showed. You think that the dolls are going to move their eyes or their heads to make you jump accept they don't. As the girls see the women in black the music starts to get more intense as they start to walk towards the window. This is used to make the scene more intense and to make the audience feel more scared. When they jump out the window there is a sudden bang type noise to show that the girls had hit the ground, then there is a scream from the mother saying "My Baby", the scream is used to emphasize the atmosphere. The diegetic sound which is used in the scene is the cup and the dolls breaking, this used to show that they are being controlled and do not care what they are doing, notice this because the girl drops the cup out of her hand like she has just died. This is used to make the scene scary because when the doll gets crushed you think that something bad is going to happen like a jump scare. Also the doll looks very scary so it should make the audience nervous when the doll is crushed.

Camera Angles

There camera angles which are used in the Women in Black are used very well. For example they get a close up in the doll and the doll looks really creepy, like one of the old ones which you think look at you as you walk by them. This is used to bring a creepy atmosphere to the audience while the music plays and also makes the audience feel like they are being watched. Another good example of a shot is when the girls are looking behind the camera and you think there is something there, then later on when the camera is panning back when the girls are walking towards the camera, there is nothing there. This is supposed to make the audience feel scared and confused because nothing is there. After that when the girls jump out of the window the camera pans back and then the women is there. This is a good way to make people feel scared and confused because they know that she is a ghost, so people should be more scared into the film because ghosts usually jump out later on to make people jump. Overall the camera angles used in the scene are used to make it look more scary, and bring out the feeling of loss and being scared.

Props/Costumes

The props that are used in the scene are very creepy, for example the dolls which are at the tea party they are shown like old dolls which are stereo typically known to be scary to be people just because of the way they look. This is a good prop to use in the shot because this can scare a lot of people and they could think that the doll would have to do with something later on in the film. Also the cups and the tea set make it a little bit more creepy, because usually you wouldn't think that little girls would play with dolls which look a little bit evil. Also the dresses that they are wearing make them look cute and adorable. It makes them look like they are helpless and can not do anything to stop themselves from jumping out of the window. Also the Women in Black has a costume which makes her look very scary, it is a dress that a person wears to a funeral so it does show a little bit of background. With the netting bit down covering her face it makes it look like she doesn't want you to see her face so that she looks more intimidating to the children.

Cliche

There is a lot of good cliches in the Women in Black, for example people always go and check out what the noise is when they shouldn't because it always results with them being dead. Another cliche is that there is a murder at the beginning to introduce the main antagonist, for example the Women in Black who kills the children. Another example is Scream, when he kills the girl introducing the murderer it makes people excited to see what else is going to happen in the movie.

Action Target Audience

Action audience

Action films are one of, if not the most popular film genres out of all of them. Both the niche and mass audiences watch them, so lots of different people watch action genre. However there is a main audience who would and will watch action genre which is young males. They usually go and see action films with other males as action films contain things which are stereotypical masculine. These include car chases, explosions, guns fights, hand to hand combat and military vehicles such as helicopter. The classes that mainly go and see action films are middle classes. They tend to have enough money to see a film at a given time period, and it would be spent on preferably a action film. The majority of characters in action films are male, so this would attract the male audience also. There are also actors varying ethic backgrounds in action films and female actors. This could be another reason for why males go to see it, he female actor might be very attractive and that can get a lot of males interested. So people may be interested in the film due to this. Another reason for why action films are so popular is because they give people adrenaline rush for some people. Some people might go and see it just for the adrenaline rush, they could also want to feel and see what the protagonist has to go through on screen.

Examples of action films:
The Avengers
Iron man
The Dark Knight
The Expendables

Horror Profile Target Audience

Horror target audience

The horror target audience is mainly for people who like to be scared. The usual age for someone watching a horror movie is between 15 and 25. This is because they are growing up and want to try new things, this for example is a good way to try it because it is a new emotion. The gender which is most likely to go and watch horror films is males, this is due to stereotypical thrill seekers which are mostly males. Also there is violence in horror films, for example there is blood and gore which is  why men mainly like because it makes them feel like it is an action film. Horror films are therefore mainly aimed at males because they seek the thrill. The class of people who horror films are aimed at working class. This is due to the level of thrill and excitement which is gained from horror film which has a low price. If higher class watch watch horror they are usually sub genre on another genre such as romance and action. Usually horror films are watched by friend groups, but there are more specific groups that like this genre. One example is a couple that are on their first date, this is a good way for couples to get more comfortable with each other and it could also be a good conversation starter.

Overall the target audience which is most likely to go and see horror films will be young (16-24) males who like to seek thrills. The audience of the horror movies can often relate to the character in the film. They often form a relationship due to the similarities and therefore have a stronger emotion pull to the film. The relation of the character also puts the audience in the shoes of the characters gaining a stronger horror effect.

Romance Target Audience

Romance Target Audience

The Romance target audience would be mostly female audience. This is because they tend to be the ones that enjoy it the most. This is because they most likely want a typical romance film story happen to them. For example the women and the man meet together at a random place by accident, then they talk and then they want to get to know each other better, so one of them asks the other to go on a date with them. Once they have gone on the date the relationship starts going to another level and then they want to be together. However there is always a part when they have an argument or something goes wrong and they break up and don't talk for ages. Then the man is the one who usually says “I love you, I want to spend the rest of my life with you" then they live happily ever after. This what women typically want in their relationship. This is because they want to live happily with them forever and there will be no arguments and they won’t break up because they are said to be the perfect couple. Another reason for why women would want to go and see romance films could be mainly for the male character. They could find the male characters attractive, which could make more women go. Women like the passion, the emotion and the affection that the romance movies convey, so they can fantasize their dream love and relationship. Also they like unrealistic films so that they dream that it comes true. Some men do like romance films, but it is very low percentage. Most men who go and see romance films tend to be in a relationship with a women, they wouldn't go and see it on their own because that would be weird.

The typical age of a romance target audiences are young females 16- 28, younger couples and older couples, around 24 - 65. This is because in the films they are usually the typical ages of the actual characters. So if it was a film which had older characters in it, then older couples would go and see it, if it was a film with younger characters in it younger people would go and see it.

Examples of Romance Movies:
Titanic
Notebook
Bridget Jones Diary
Sleepless in Seattle

Iron Man Opening scene Analysis

Iron Man

Iron man is an action film about a Billionaire super smart man called tony stark, who is captured by terrorists and is forced to make weapons for them, instead he makes an iron suit which then leads onto him becoming one of the greatest super heroes of marvel.

Characters
Characters in the Iron man opening are represented as serious people because they are soldiers who are escorting Tony Stark. Tony Stark is the main protagonist in this film and is Iron man. Tony is represented as a fun but sarcastic person because they
wont the audience to feel like he is a smart guy but doesn't take things seriously. He often jokes around a lot for example when he is talking to the soldier in the car, he says" I feel like you're driving me to court martial, this is crazy what did I do? What aren't you allowed to talk?" He says it like he is really serious but he intends it to be funny to the other soldiers. He also talks to ladies like he is flirting with them so you can call him a genius and player who is good with the ladies. When the car is attacked he seems hopeless and he can't do any-thing to help the others. This portrays him as a character who is weak and has a smart mind kind of like the stereotypes of nerds, they are super smart but they are weak and helpless when it comes to physical activities like sports they are more comfortable with maths and science just like Tony Stark. There are lots of ways that the audience can recognize the main protagonist, one way is that the camera is mostly focused on him, when he gets out of the car it mainly follows him so it is obvious that he is the main character. Also it is mostly an close up shot of Tony so they can get more of an idea of who he is and what is personality is like.

Sound
Sound in Iron Man is used very well,  for example at the start of the scene there is complete silence and just the shot of the cars driving a long in a desert, suddenly music plays and then the whole situation changes. At first you think that the shot is going to be serious and something bad is going to happen but then music comes on and changes the whole perspective. The music is catchy and sounds like a proper action song. It has a rock theme to it which makes it sound very masculine, it also gets people excited for the action that is coming. The music also makes you think that something intense is about to happen but instead it switches to them speaking in a car, which then catches people off guard for when the missiles hit the car. The diegetic sound in the films is very good also, for example you can hear the car at the same time as when the soldiers are speaking, which shows that the director has not forgotten the small things which makes the film better.

Camera Angles
There are lots of camera angles used to give a different perspective in the scene. At first there is an extreme long shot of the vehicles traveling through the desert, this shows the audience where they are, this is a great way for the movie to be introduced because it is different to most other action movies. After the long shot a medium shot is used to introduce the music to the scene, this is a sudden cut so it immediately makes the audience think there is going to be action. An establishing shot is used of the setting to show where they are and what situation they are in. If they are in the desert it usually means that there is going to be military activity. It also gives an impression to the audience that it is going to be an action film because it is the genre which uses the desert theme the most. A two shot is used of the characters in the car, when Tony is looking at the soldier next to him. This shows their relationship as nervous for the soldier, because he knows who Tony is and he is nervous because he famous and rich. Also the soldier feels intimidated because he knows that Tony creates weapons for military uses all over the world and that could put fear into him. A tracking shot is used on the cars at the start of the shot when the music starts. It follows the military vehicles to say that it is an action film, it also gives the audience the impression that it is going to an action film because the military is associated with action.

Props/Costumes
In the car there are two different types of people, one is Tony stark who is wearing a suit and the others are soldiers wearing military uniforms. Tony is presented as a rich man who has it all, the audience can tell this by what he is wearing. The suit makes him look like a business man who is very successful and has a lot of money. This is a good look for Tony because he is a person who has a lot of money and it represents him as a person who has a lot of power and is important to the world. Also he is holding a glass of brandy, which is a typical drink that rich people tend to drink, to make them look like they have a lot of money. The soldiers are represented as soldiers who are protecting Tony like they are escorting him to somewhere just so he doesn't get into trouble. They are treated like normal people they don't get to have any brandy or alcohol, it's like they are in a place where they aren't allowed to do anything accept follow orders. The props are very noticeable like the glass of brandy, this shows a big difference between the soldiers and tony, because it shows that tony is more important than them. Another example of props is the radio, this plays a big part in the first part of the scene because it plays the music which is very loud, which then turns to a quieter sound when they are in the car like it is actually playing in real life.

The Dark Knight Opening Analysis

Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is an action film about Batman "The Dark Knight" who has to stop the main antagonist The Joker, who is an criminal mastermind who uses his smarts to rob banks and get money. The Jokers main aim is to kill and find out  who Batman is.

The Characters
The Characters are very different to each other in the opening scene of the movie, they all have different masks which separates them very well. When they are in the middle of the heist they all have different roles which will make the plan successful, for example there are two on the roof and three that go through the main entrance. The ones on the roof are going to disable the alarms so that the police are not informed about the robbery and the three in the bank are going to do all the dirty work like crowd control and getting rid of security. However before the scene where the three clowns get in to the bank, there is one which is on their own. This makes it very suspicious for the audience because he is the only one that is by himself, so the audience could suspect him to be the main antagonist. Also he is different to the others in many ways, for example he is not wearing his mask and all the others are and his standing posture is like he has a hunched back. Also when he is standing on the curb it zooms onto his mask so it makes the audience look out for that particular person during the bank robbery. The audience could also notice that the clown is on his own and doesn't speak until the very end. The audience is made to look out for the Joker in the beginning and are given a lot of hints. For example when they zoom into the mask when he is standing on the curb. Each of the clowns look like they represent different emotions so that is how thy are separated from each other.

Sound
The sound in the opening of The Dark Knight is very important to make it set the tone for the audience. It starts of with non-diegetic sound which is the music. When they first zoom into the building you can hear a violin which makes it sound sinister and like something is going to happen. This gives the affect to the audience because they are expecting something sudden to happen. It also it makes it sound more intense because they are about to show something which is very serious and illegal in the real world. Also the music makes it sound like they are on a time limit and need to do it quick before the police get there. It also makes it sound like they are trying to be sneaky and not get caught so it plays beat constantly to make it more intense. It then shows the window smashing and the clowns setting up to get to the other side of the building. They also add all the other sound affects which make a big difference to the whole shot. For example when the clown shoots the gun, you can hear the wire make a zoom noise like it is getting shot and is going at high speed. This is known a diegetic sound which is in the shot, it adds a lot of affect to the shot and makes it sound realistic. Another example of a diegetic sound is the talking, when most of the clowns are speaking they sound like the average gang member who sounds like they have no education and are the tough guys. However when the Joker speaks he has a voice that sounds very menacing and can put fear into the people that he doesn't like. It also separates him from the other clowns so that he can look like the more scary person and is more of match for Batman.

Camera Angles
The Camera angles in the Dark Knight are very good and are used perfectly to get a good effect on the mood of the situation. At the start of the scene there is a camera shot which is long shot and it is zooming towards the building. This gives the audience the perspective that something is going to happen in the building, it also goes well with the menacing music, which brings the effect that something bad is going to happen. A close up shot is used on the Joker when he reveals his mask to the audience, this should bring a shocking reaction to the audience because they should know that
the Joker is one of the main antagonists so seeing him rob the bank at the beginning of the movie is a lot different then other movies. A tracking shot is used on the Joker when they are outside of the bank getting out of the car. It is mainly focused on him because the director wanted the audience to focus more on him then anything else.

Mise-en-scene
In the opening the audience would identify symbols such as the clown masks, which represent the Joker. The director did this because the Joker is the main antagonist in the film. So he did this so people would think that those people work for the Joker, instead of the joker being in the gang with them. This could make the audience feel confused for when the Joker reveals himself by taking his mask to the bank owner. Also it could make people concerned about why he killed his crew when he would want as much help as possible to stop the Batman.

Props/Costumes
The Props used in the film are very realistic for example the guns, masks, vault and drill. The props that are used need to be realistic so that they add a good effect to the opening. The guns that are used in the bank robbery are typical for the action genre because it shows lots of fast paced scenes that get people excited for action.  Also the high tech tool they use like the drill are commonly used in bank robberies because they can make the audience think that they are a rich and well organised mafia or gang. The costumes which are used have a massive impact on how the audience may judge the film, for example if the robbers went into the bank without wearing the masks the audience may think that they are not as scary as they could be, they could also think that they would not be as intimidating to the ones that they are robbing. Also they are dressed up in black suits so they could be disguised as businessmen who cant be identified. This is also a good disguise because it is a city that is mostly made up of business so it will be hard for the police to identify them when they are dressed up.

What are you doing here? - Analysis

What are you doing here?

For our first task we were told to go out and film different types of shots of us saying what are you doing here? For our first show we used a close shot of us walking up and asking a person what are you doing here. The close up an good shot,  but it was not great. The camera was shaking and it becomes very distracting for the person to watch and takes the concentration of the people in the shot away. Also the environment wasn't the best because it was in a very green place and it doesn't look very realistic. Another shot which we used was a medium shot which shows the top half the person. Again the camera was very shaky and it didn't look good because of the environment. We also did one over the shoulder shot where we can see the back of the persons head closest to the camera, and then in the background you can see the person speaking to the other person.

Our strengths were that we did good camera shots, and we know how to use a range of shots. We also know what they are and ho to do them. By knowing this we could create good shots if we have a good plan and know what to film we could use a knowledge of shots to create a good film.

We have a few weaknesses with our shots, one of them is the camera shaking. When we film and the camera shaking it is really distracting because all you can see is the character going out of shot and it looks really bad. To improve the shot we either need to get a tripod to keep the camera still, this would improve our shot a lot. Another thing that we could improve is the location of the shots and the lighting, the location of the shot is in a place where there is a lot of trees and bushes, so it seems a little random people to be filmed. The lighting was very dark because it was a cloudy day, so it was bad for people to see what was going on in the shot. To improve this we need to find a place where it is more open so there is more light shown and it look better for the shot.

Preliminary Task Analysis

Preliminary Task Analysis

For our preliminary task we filmed a class doing an essay. We used different camera angles to make the film look different and entertaining. For example we used close shots on Conor and Matt to show a different perspective. We also used match on action when we recorded Conor and Matt writing with the pen, although it isn't the greatest match on action it still shows that we can use different skills with the camera.

We have a lot of strengths and weaknesses in our film, one of our weaknesses is the camera shaking. it was difficult to keep the camera still, which does ruin the shot because all you can see the camera shaking and that takes your concentrating away from whats happening in the shot. Also we did make the shots a bit long  for example we made the match on action shot too long which drags the shot on and makes it more boring for the audience. Final weakness is we need more dynamism in the shot so it looks more better.

Our strengths were, we had a range of shots, for example we had close up, mediums and long range shots. This is to show that we understand all the different types of shots and how to use them. Another strengths was we knew a range of different shots for example close ups, medium shots and reverse shots. We showed all of the above and we used them to make the shots more interesting. Our final strength was in the editing, we used a lot of good cuts to show different angles of the scene. For example we cut from a close up on Matt to a shot of Luke sitting at a desk. This shows that we used to shots to show whats going on at the same time.

Targets- what we need to improve on is the camera shaking, to resolve this we are going to bring a tripod which should keep it still for when we are filming. Lighting we need to make sure that the lighting is the same the whole time, so to solve this we need to make sure that the lights in the room are on the whole time because at first we had the lights off, then we turned them on at the end and  it didn't look right.

The Expendables 2 Opening Analysis

The Expendables 2

The Expendables 2 is an action film which involves a special force military team, which are on a mission to save a hostage from being killed. They use unusual ways to do this, for example they drive in with three armored trucks, and start shooting people to get through.

The Characters are violent and deadly, in the scene it shows that they are holding different weapons, which shows that they have different skills and are independent to each other. Also they seem like they are close to each other and trust each other with their lives, which helps us as the audience relate more to them. The audience can also recognize the main characters as they have a great introduction to the film. They come in three armored vehicles which have loads of soldiers in it which are heavily armed and are going into a burning town. Also the audience can tell that they are the main characters because they show them all working as a team. It also tells the audience that if they work as a team they can do anything which is dangerous and is likely to kill them in real life which is an classic action cliche. Another way they show that they are the main characters is by the close up shots on them, this gives the audience a good judgement on the characters by the way they act in the situation and to each other.

The sound that they use involves lots of explosions and guns firing to add effect through violent scenes. They also use a lot of verbal communication which gives the scene more of an action feeling. It also adds effect to the atmosphere because it shows that the team is under fire and is in a lot of danger. The sound is very important within an action film, because without the sound it wont sound very exciting or like its an action film. They use degetic sound to make it sound like that they are in the middle of a gun fight.and they are being fired upon. Also the characters uses a lot of diegetic sound like shouting to the other person to make it sound intense and like they are in danger. This makes the audience feel like they are in the action and are being shouted at by the characters which gets them more excited. This also shows that it is a action genre film because of the intense action like gunfire and explosions. The music which is non-diegetic sounds very intense and fast paced. It makes it sound like they are in a hurry to save the hostage.

The shots they use are mostly medium and long shots which constantly overlap with each other to help add effect to the surroundings and emphasis to the verbal communication between the protagonists. There is also few amount of close ups on the characters to show what they think of the situation and how they are coping with it. It shows a little bit of the characters personality so people can see how they react to the situations. For example one if the characters who are driving are smiling and laughing, this shows that he enjoys being endangered and has no fear. An establishing shot is used to show the setting of where the intro takes place. It shows that the characters are in a desert in the middle of know where, and there is an army base which is heavily guarded by soldiers. It is based in the desert because it shows the audience that it is not supposed to be found and it is hidden away from civilization. This also makes it more like a real setting where the army would be, for example soldiers in Afghanistan are usually based in the desert, they do this in the film so the audience can then feel like they based the setting in real life conditions. The tracking shots is used to follow the characters in the vehicle, this makes the audience feel like they are in the vehicle with them and engages them to feel what the soldiers are feeling like.

You can tell that it is an action film because there are lots of explosions and gunfire. Also they are shouting to each other to make the scene look more intense and fast paced. This gets people more excited about the movie. Also they wear army uniform which makes them stand out to the other characters, it also says that they are soldiers. You can also see that it is an action film by the vehicles that are driving. This is shown by the vehicles being covered in heavy armor so no bullets can get through. This is typical of the genre because the director wants to show you that these soldiers are unstoppable and know what they are doing, so when they get into a fight they aren't  going to get hurt badly they are going to get a scratch on their face and carry on like nothing happened. Also the hero usually doesn't get hurt badly until the end, when they fight the person who they have been after the whole time. So if there is an explosion at a gas station and it is in the middle of the film, usually they wont get hurt they will only get a scratch, which shows they are really tough. However at the end they will get broken bones and deep cuts which will stop them from beating the guy up, until the very end when he is about to get killed, he suddenly gets a weapon or uses his fighting skills and counters the attack leading to the enemy being killed. This is a typical cliche in action movies, and has been used in a lot of movies.

My Favorite Film Genre

My Favorite Film Genre

My favorite film genre is action. This is because it makes the film more exciting and gets you pumped when watching. It also makes the film less boring to watch because it brings you in, to watch more. A good example of a action film is the Dark Knight, because it has lots of fights and explosions in it. For example when Batman is on his motor bike and heading towards the Joker, the Joker starts shooting a gun at batman, that is what makes it more exciting to watch when it is fast paced.

Another reason for why i like action films is the CGI, (Computer Generated Image) action movies make a great job of making explosions, firing guns, blood and fighting scene. If an action movie did not have CGI then it wouldn't look good and less people would watch them because they look bad. A good example of this is when Joker blows up the hospital in the dark knight, the special effects on that show that, it is more exciting.

I do like lots of film genres, but the ones that are my favorite are action Martial Art films. This is because of the fighting scenes. The scenes are so well done that it looks almost real. Although they are choreographed and take a lot of practice it shows people can actually do the stunts and moves in real life, and that it is not just animated like most fights. One good example of martial art films is fist of legends by Jet Li, it is a old but a great martial art film, the stunts do sometimes look fake but the fighting choreograph is amazing.
